Inside Aqualite Mattresses: Layers That Make the Difference

A mattress looks like one object. It behaves like six or seven, each doing a different job. Understanding what sits where is the fastest way to tell a genuine specification from a marketing one.

Why layering exists at all

No single material does everything a mattress needs. Something has to carry load without bottoming out. Something has to relieve pressure at the shoulder and hip. Something has to move air so the sleeper does not overheat. Something has to survive daily contact with skin, fabric and cleaning.

A layered build lets each material do the one thing it is best at, and the order of the layers matters as much as the materials themselves.

The support core

This is the bottom two-thirds of the mattress and it determines almost everything about how the bed feels five years from now. There are two mainstream approaches.

• Pocket spring. Individually sleeved coils that compress independently. Excellent motion isolation and contouring; the practical choice where two people share a bed.
• Bonnell spring. Interconnected coils. Firmer, more economical, and better suited to institutional use where budget and durability outrank contouring.
• High-density foam core. No springs. Lighter, quieter, and easier to handle — the usual choice for roll away beds, sofa cum beds and thinner builds.

Coil count is the number buyers ask about. Coil gauge and sleeve quality matter more. A high count of thin, poorly sleeved coils will lose height faster than a lower count of properly specified ones.

The transition layer

Between a spring core and a soft comfort layer sits a layer whose only job is to stop you feeling the springs. Skip it and the mattress feels fine in the showroom and unpleasant within a year, as the comfort layer compresses and the core starts to telegraph through.

The comfort layer

This is what you feel in the first thirty seconds, and it is where most of the perceived quality lives. Density is the number that matters: low-density foam feels identical to high-density foam on day one and completely different on day five hundred. It is also the easiest place for a supplier to save money invisibly.

Thickness without density is the oldest trick in the category. A ten-inch mattress built from low-density foam will develop body impressions faster than a well-specified six-inch one.

Airflow and the quilt

Heat is the most common complaint about foam-heavy mattresses. Perforated foam, breathable fabrics and a quilted top layer all move warm air away from the sleeper. In Indian conditions this is not a luxury feature — for eight months of the year it is the difference between a comfortable night and a restless one.

The cover

The cover is the only layer the guest or customer actually touches, and it takes all the abuse: friction, moisture, cleaning chemicals. A knitted stretch fabric with a proper quilt sits better and lasts longer than a woven fabric stretched flat. For commercial use, specify a separate washable protector as part of the order rather than relying on the cover alone.

If a supplier can tell you the density of every foam layer without checking, they made it. If they cannot, they bought it.
